Health and Safety Specialist - Job Description


JOB PURPOSE:

Reporting to the Health, Safety and Wellness Manager, the Health, Safety & Wellness Specialist is responsible for providing support in all areas of HSW for driving continuous improvement in all departments. In addition, this position is responsible for leading Conestoga's site expansion, wellness program, project management and WSIB programs. The HSW Specialist position also acts as a Specialist to ensure timely completion of continuous improvement projects.

KEY JOB FUNCTIONS / ROLES / RESPONSIBILITIES:

Company Wide Health and Safety Support

  • Legislative Reviews/Advice
  • Ergonomic Assessments
  • Risk Assessments
  • Hazard Assessments
  • Job Hazard Analysis
  • Physical Demands Descriptions
  • Visual Job Instructions
  • Discomfort Reporting and follow up
  • Shout Out Safety Program
  • Coach leadership on health and safety processes and programs as needed
  • Lead H&S projects as requested by Health, Safety & Wellness Manager

Project Management

  • Act as HSW subject matter expert on department-initiated projects
  • Act as HS&W Lead on projects that HSW is involved
  • Lead projects meant to progress the HSW team objectives as delegated by the HSW Manager
  • Research and develop justifications for projects and continuous improvement initiatives
  • Complete and submit Capital Expenditures to the HSW Manager
  • Utilize Change Management tools and available Project Management tools in working with all stakeholders to detail specific project deliverables
  • Analyze project performance/data and produce progress reports against requirements
  • Ensure that all budgetary objectives are met, adjusting as needed
  • Ensuring documentation is maintained throughout the length of the project
  • Communicate plans, actions, risks, and issues with key stakeholders
  • Complete post project audits to verify the degree of success and sustainability of the completed project and report on results
  • Perform onsite Factory Acceptance Tests (FATs) to ensure new equipment meets OHSA legislation and best practices prior to being introduced into production
  • Confirm all Pre-Start Health and Safety Reviews are scheduled and all non-compliances and recommendations are implemented prior to the equipment being introduced into production
  • Lead third party inspections and audits. Determine, implement and verify the corrective actions have been completed and are sustainable.

Site Expansion

  • Attend all meetings and workshops as the frontline HS&W representative
  • Provide ergonomic, process design, security and material flow advice
  • Ensure all legislative requirements are addressed in the planning phase and implemented in the final phase (i.e. loto, confined spaces, etc.)
  • Participate in factory acceptance testing of new equipment
  • Lead hazard and risk assessments, complete physical job descriptions and assist the training team with Visual Job Instructions

Wellness Program

  • Leader of our Wellness Program
  • Review our occupational and non-occupational statistics to develop initiatives to reduce the risk of the same health, safety and illness incidents
  • Working alongside the EE Engagement & Development Department, develop and implement Wellness initiatives at least quarterly
  • Complete post event reviews to determine the effectiveness of the initiative and the level of team engagement

Site Security

  • Contact for our site security program, including keys, perimeter access, protester program, visitor and contractor access and other duties that may arise
  • Contact for all site security issues, including guardhouse, GA Locks, maintenance, facilities, engineering and any other additional stakeholders
  • Schedule repairs, installations and new initiatives
  • Maintain program policies, records and reporting and provide recommendations for improvements

Facilitate the Company's Early and Safe Return to Work Case Management Program

  • Review Accident Investigation reports; follow up with supervisors and team members
  • Verify the Accident Investigation corrective actions have been completed
  • Communicate with our third-party disability management firm on all aspects of case management and provide required documentation
  • Monitor and meet with modified workers to ensure a safe and timely return to pre-injury duties
  • Update the HSW Manager on WSIB claims
  • Schedule and attend WSIB Return to Work Meetings
  • Analyze WSIB injury statistics, determine trends and provide recommendations to mitigate future injuries

Enhance and promote a strong team and health, safety & wellness culture

  • Enforce all established health and safety regulation and safe work practices in accordance with company policy
  • Maintain a visual presence in the plant assisting and identify workplace hazards
  • Ensure strong communication and alignment with managers and team members on workload and status of projects and initiatives


Personal Development

  • Remain current with OHS and technical knowledge
  • Attend company required training
  • Attend regular 1:1 coaching/update sessions

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • A degree/diploma in a related field and a Post-Secondary Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety
  • 3-5 years working full time as a Health and Safety Specialist in the food or manufacturing industry
  • Thorough knowledge of the Occupational Health & Safety Act and Regulations, CSA, Human Rights and the Workplace Safety and Insurance Act
  • 2-3 years' experience with WSIB case management, incident investigation, workplace inspection, ergonomics and risk assessments
  • Knowledge of workplace wellness and security programs and initiatives
  • Complete proficiency with MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint and other common applications
  • Must be decisive, a team player and be able to work well under pressure
  • Ability to deal with tight deadlines effectively and efficiently, and day-to-day health and safety issues and concerns as they arise
  • Strong organizational skills and project management skills
  • Strong persuasive written and verbal communication skills
